Chicago’s summers are hot!  Whether you live on the south side or in the Northwest Suburbs, in order to keep your family cool and comfortable, you need to keep your air conditioner in top-notch condition.  One of the most important things you can do is keep your air conditioning system clean.  This not only extends the life of your air conditioning system, but also saves money on utility bills.

One of the most important things you can do is to make sure your air conditioner coils are clean. A/C systems have two coils – one that is part of the indoor system (evaporator coil) and one is a component of the outdoor unit (condenser coil).  The evaporator coil absorbs heat by passing air over the air handler’s fan and then transferring it to the unit outside, from there, the warm air is passed over the condenser coil and released into the outdoors.

As the air passes over these coils, dirt, dust and pollen can get caught in the coils and make them less efficient.  A dirty coil will inhibit proper heat transfer, and consume more energy.  In fact, the U.S. Department of Energy says that “a dirty condenser coil can increase compressor energy consumption by 30 percent.”  There may also be a degradation of the dehumidification process.  A significant problem in our humid Chicago summers.  Overall air quality may also decline.  Finally, the HVAC system’s life may be significantly decreased because of the added stress.
